People always say that we want to grow up so fast, but when we are grown up with grown up responsibilities we want to be children again.
Well, I can honestly say that I don't want to be a little kid again. No really, I wasn't very bright and cried all the time and had frequent nose bleeds, and with three siblings close in age, it's impossible to not do something stupid that is going to get you into trouble whether you think it is fair or not.
And I don't now feel the need for my parents to take care of me. I love having a job and getting an education and having my own house. Of course, part of that feeling is because I have parents who love me and still help me the best they can and who are always there for me. I'm sure I would feel much differently if they simply left me on my own. As it stands, I know that they will back off when I ask them to and that they will help me when I need them, the same as I will be there for them. Now we can hang out and go to dinner and talk about life and give each other advice *of course, I am more often on the receiving end of this* and simply enjoy each other's presence. In fact, all of those things that I enjoyed doing with my parents when i was little, I still do today because my parents are just that amazing.
I'm a big girl now, and my parents don't have to spank me or yell at me when I make a mistake because I know when I've done something wrong and I'm perfectly capable of handling any repercussions and learning lessons from my faults.
So...
What is growing up then? If I don't mind all of these "adult" responsibilities of owning a house and having a job and taking care of myself. What were my parents warning me about all these years about the "real world" and about life not being "fair"?
Well, I've finally figured it out... *sort of*
As you grow up, you might no longer be watched over as much by your parents, but that omniscient presence is replaced by something much worse.
You see, generally speaking, your parents love you. No matter how mean or unjust they might seem, they love you. They want you to succeed and there are times that helping you to succeed leads to some seriously tough love. *and, mind you, there are tons of emails circulating around about this: "I'm glad my mother never let me go out in those clothes, or hang out with those druggies, etc, and I am better off for it now even though i didn't understand it then and thank you mom."
All of that tough love and those life lessons that you thought were so unfair were simply preparing you for life. No, not necessarily just for the responsibilities of life, but also for the punishments of life.
As you get older, and your parents are no longer there to play the "bad guy", something else must take over. There is no one set thing or organization. It is just a mob-mentality of different groups of people who overrun your life, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Guess what? Individuals such as parents might have feelings, but the police department doesn't feel guilty when they give you a ticket for speeding. A home-owner's association doesn't feel bad when they summon you to a hearing for property damage. They aren't secretly crying inside because their poor baby has to learn how to live on its own. There is no bed-time talk or make up hug or going out for ice cream later.
No, all you can do is appear in court to argue your case *which, in my opinion, is the equivalent to one parent telling you "no" and then you running to the other parent and asking the same question in hopes for a "yes". Only in this case, the other parent has already been warned by the parent who said no in the first place.*
Anyway... I was just enlightened last night is all and I thought that I would share my findings. I understood the whole idea of greater responsibility. But it's the sucking it up when you get punished unfairly that I hadn't yet grasped.
But on the bright side, the more I think about it, the more I realize how well my parents have prepared me for all of these wonderful grown up mishaps.
So.... just in case anyone was wondering... there is a reason for that little somewhat depressing rant.
Yesterday while I was in class, David texted me asking if it was all right for him to go to a 12am showing of a new movie with his brother. I of course said sure since he's a big boy and I didn't really want to see that movie anyway so I figured he could hang out with his brother and I would just watch some Quantum Leap when I got home.
And so that is what we did.
And then he came home around 3am and woke me up, very worried, and asked me where my car was.
ahh, yes. my car. Where was it? I had left it in the parking space I usually park in outside the house. There was no reason it shouldn't have been there. It has a hang tag permit on the rearview mirror, and who on earth would want to steal a beat up 98 buick? so I got up and looked and he was right. My car was gone.
No worries. I still have the numbers I needed from the last time my car was towed, so I calmly called the police non-emergency line, asked where my car was, and yes, it had been towed.
hmm... no worries. The tow guys were going to feel really dumb when they realized that my hang tag was on the mirror.
So I called the tow place and the guy confirmed my car was indeed there and was even nice enough to double check for me to see if the tag was hanging up.
And, "No maam. It ain't on the rearview mirror and it ain't even on the dashboard or nothin'."
"Oh. *sigh* well, when do you guys open?"
"Actually, we're open right now if you want to come pick it up."
"okay, I'll go ahead and do that. Thank you." *I have a horrible habit of thanking people for screwing me over. It's kind of like thanking your parents for beating you with a belt, but only once this time instead of three times because they love you.*
"Oh, are you the owner of the car?"
"No, actually my dad is the owner."
"Ah. All right, well I'll let you get it anyway."
OH what a kind soul. HOw about you don't TOW my car in the first place, F*CKER?!
what alyse actually said: "Okay. Thank you. I'll be there in a little bit."
And so, David drove me to the towing place, I paid $150 to get my car back *yeah, that makes a total of $300 now in towing fees. Now add that to whatever I'll probably have to pay because of my speeding ticket, top it with the fact that I had to go out at around 4 o clock in the morning, and maybe you'll understand why I came to my above realization of the actual reasons that growing up sucks -- and then take a look at what happened to mom over the summer just in case you aren't pissed enough at society. That makes my whiny problems look tiny in comparison.*
And now I'm probably going to need to ask my mom if she can pay for my market day this month. That or I'll take the money from my savings account. Or just not get market day. I guess we'll see.
Okay, so then I got into my car and immediately looked for the pass. The man was right: there wasn't nothin on the dashboard or the seat. Nope, my pass had fallen on the floor just out of view. How the hell did that happen and how the hell did i not notice?
And how do I know that it didn't fall while the car was being TOWED?!
Answer: I Don't.
So now I'm going to have to try to petition the HOA to get rid of the towing enforcement or something because I think that it's all pretty wrong. And in the end, I probably won't ever get my money back.
Anyway, If nothing else, David and I are going to tape that m*ther f*cker to my rearview mirror so this doesn't happen ever again.
At least David noticed last night so that i didn't have to wake up to it this morning and try to get my mom or David or Ty off work to take me to the tow place. And I was able to get into work on time.
Of course, the whole getting into work on time is another funny story. See, I had work this morning, and that was the reason I had David take me to the tow place last night. I took off on Monday because of the snow, and it doesn't look very good to take off two days in the same week if you can help it.
So I forced my tired butt out of bed this morning, took a shower, got dressed, quickly made myself some tuna salad, and went to work. There are speed traps all over the place for some reason right now, and it is making me really jumpy, so I haven't had too good a time driving lately. What's worse is that I always notice the speed traps after the fact, and of course I am going the speed limit because I am a good driver. Then how and why did I get a speeding ticket?
So, I arrived at work today a good fifteen minutes early and said hi and the girl printing off the daily schedule looked at it and said "Alyse, you are here but you are not on the schedule." And then the supervisors looked it over and I of course at that point knew that I had just made a mistake because seriously, think about the rest of this post, for example.
I know I know. It's hard to believe that Alyse might make a mistake, but you're just going to have to take my word on this one.
That's right, folks. After all was said and done, I went into work on my day off. I... am... unbelievable.

FCPL in the news
The library being filmed here is the new Fairfax City library. It's really pretty. I work at the one in Centreville. This video talks about the cutbacks etc affecting the library that will begin this July.
As of yet, I won't be losing my job because I am a merit employee -- they might be cutting back on my benefits though. For example, they are getting rid of pay for performance, so i won't be getting any bonuses or raises anytime soon. And they are going to cutback on healthcare and retirement and all that. Basically, it isn't anything that is going to hurt me personally too badly because I don't have my health or retirement vested in the FCPL system.
The staff cutbacks are taking place in the pages... they are firing them all and then rehiring less than half of them, and firing for good 6 hour and 12 hour non-merit employees working for the circ and info desks. They are also going to be freezing positions, so when people quit merit positions, new people won't be hired unless the position is decided to be critical to library activity.

Hungry
I'm hungry right now. I just got back from work almost an hour ago and i am making myself some rice to add tuna to. *yeah, mom said that is an odd combination. i guess i'll find out ^_^*
I had an egg this morning with some swiss cheese. And then I had some Trader Joe's onion soup *i don't recommend it though, because it doesn't taste very good at all. even david didn't like it, and david loves onions* at work. But now I'm still hungry, so I'm making a good amount of brown rice to mix with my tuna. But it takes forever for it to cook. I'm going to have to see if i can find some precooked ones with nothing added that i can use instead.
I found an interesting cook book at the library today. I think i might go out and buy it. It has a lot of really good whole grain recipes etc, and it is designed for diabetics, so it is pretty balanced as far as carbohydrates and sugars go.
I picked it up because i was getting really concerned about the lifestyle stuff i currently have because, like i said before, it really emphasizes cutting out sugar and carbs and all that, but I worry because the author isn't really a dietician or anything and sometimes i start to wonder if he really has health in mind, or just losing weight. Because those are two totally different things.
*****okay, in case anyone was wondering: yes, brown rice and tuna tastes delicious.*****
also, all of the recipes in the other books focus way more on no carbs or sugar at all from grains, etc. That is great if you are not allergic to soy and if you have the time to prepare and endless supplies of fresh veggies. But I'm not at home living off of disability like he was. I am a student who works 20 hours a week, and it is very hard to balance stuff that way, especially when you are allergic to everything.
detour: I had class last night and hadn't eaten as much as i needed to for the sake of time *and having improperly cooked what i was going to eat* and there was a girl there who is constantly eating raw fruits and vegetables. That's great I wish i could do that. I have always -- really, ever since i can remember -- wanted to be that girl walking around with fresh fruit and veggies in her pocket just munching on it all day long. The idea of walking around crunching on celery seriously makes my mouth water.
Don't get me wrong, I love salty flour-based snacks *which of course are now filled soy oil and what not* as much as the next person, but they just aren't as satisfying as sitting down and munching on an avacodo.
So, anyway, this girl is notorious for just randomly whipping a whole carrot out of her purse and munching on it in the middle of class, and the yesterday, she got up during our break and began peeling an orange. *argh... i have never been able to peel oranges. I always ended up with a sticky mess. but of course, i'll probably never learn now since i can't even eat them*
and people started giving her a hard time about it. just kind of admiringly commenting that wow, it really takes time and patience to do that. And you can eat a whole bag of fritos before the orange is peeled. and talking about how she always has fresh food with her and what not.
Now, I would have taken that as a compliment on my patience. But no, she felt the need to defend herself. Okay, have at it.
Her response was that she works in the morning and comes straight to school after class most days and is there til the evening and so of course she is going to bring snacks with her.
so, this begs the question for Alyse: what am i supposed to do? I was just sitting there with my little lunchbox, filled with half-baked rice pudding that was inedible. Before and After class I went to the vending machine area to see what they had, but i couldn't eat a single thing.
Yeah, that's right. I went multiple times as if the machines were going to swap out foods just for me.
Sure, they had fritos and gummies and energy bars, even cup o noodles and frozen sandwiches... but i couldn't eat a single one of them. I'm allergic to all of the fresh sandwiches in the johnson center. The only place i can eat that i'm not entirely allergic to is Taco Bell, and at this point, i'd rather go hungry because it ends up making my stomach hurt just the same.
Anyway, the point of me talking about that is seriously...
You know you've hit an all time low when watching someone peel an orange makes you cry -- that's all i have to say.
I did get some onion soup when i got home though. But it really tasted terrible. I even tried to doctor it up with stuff and i still just turned it from inedible to barely edible. I finished as much as I could at work today and threw the rest out.
It also doesn't help that my metabolism has kicked up a bit. I used to be able to go for a pretty long time without eating if i needed to. But now i have to have breakfast, then something at work between 10 and 2 then something when i get home or on the bus then something before my last class. and then sometimes i'm still hungry when i get home, although i usually just have a glass of water or milk or something at that point and get my butt to bed.
It feels like i'm eating a ton constantly, but i asked david about it and he said that i really haven't been eating as much, and that it just seems like it because i'm more frequently and when i'm eating, it's more substantial. Which i think makes sense, because you don't really notice eating a whole thing of chocolates or chips while your sitting in front of the tv, but you really notice when eaten a couple of sausages or eggs or brown rice with tuna ^_^. It isn't mindless eating since you're making it and what not.
So anyway, back to my main point, I read in my biology text something troubling about "Fad" diets, of which they included low-carb dieting, which can be really terrible for you. I just wanted to emphasize that that isn't really what I'm doing. I am much more so trying to cut out overly processed carbohydrates and sugars that are BAD for you. And I am not even opting to cut out grains and use just veggies for fiber and what not. I'm still incorporating my whole grains. *since I haven't developed an allergy to them... yet*
I can't follow the Stella stuff too closely because, since i am allergic to so much, i could very easily slip into the "low carb trap" of just eating fatty meats and dairy stuff and not enough veggies or anything else.
So I've been looking for more ways to use the stuff that I can eat that is good for me like whole grains, and this cook book was written closely with a nutritionist and all that.
It also has a really cute concept call "GO -- SLOW -- WHOA foods"which basically lists GO foods: foods you can eat pretty much any time. SLOW foods: foods you should try to limit to maybe only three times a week at most. and WHOA foods: which are more like comfort foods that you really should try to avoid and limit yourself to maybe three times a month at the most.
Also, looking through it, it doesn't make heavy use of the foods i am allergic to *namely soy. which is a real heart-breaker for me because I'm not a big meat fan, and I love tofu. you know... concentrated soy...* ... okay, there is some use of soy (because it is just so darn amazing) okay, and i take some of that back... there is of course a lot of mention of eating raw fruits and nuts and veggies for snacks
it also has a really cute way of introducing the foods in phases giving you actual weekly and daily meal plan examples to help you understand what a balanced daily intake looks like. I think that is really cool because that is exactly what the nutritionist did with me during our appointment, and it is a really helpful activity. The only problem was that she kept recommending that I eat foods that I was ALLERGIC to.
yeah, so nevermind. Basically, all of the food that you have to eat in order to live a good well-balanced life, I am allergic to. no no, i'm cool with that. seriously. but the next time a doctor tells me that i am obese, i am not responsible for my actions. hmph.
no worries though. there are still a lot of recipes in there that are really good for whole grains and stuff. I was just annoyed because all of the "snack" sections consist of "have 1 cup of raw veggies. have 1 medium peach. etc etc"
i'm all right though. actually, i have to head to school soon, so i'll end the post now. ^_^
I haven't posted what I've been eating lately, but that is mostly because i've been doing a pretty good job of balancing things out/eating properly, although i'm still looking for awesome recipes. i have the ones that alexa and aaron gave me, so those will be fun to do as well.
Now I have to get used to getting up earlier and playing DDR.

13 February 2009
It's Friday the Thirteenth...
...And I hope your day has been better than mine.
Actually, this morning went well. I got up, had breakfast, went to work, got work done, didn't get yelled at. And so on.
Then I decided to head home. Well, actually i was heading home so that I could get my cooking supplies and go to my parents' house where I was going to make Valentine's Day cookies and chocolates with my brothers. (I'm still going to go over tonight, but I'm waiting for David to get home because I'm a bit upset and don't really feel like driving anymore today).
Yeah so, if you hadn't guessed it by now, I got pulled over for speeding on my way home. okay, a valid reason to pull someone over. It would have been nice though if it had occurred to me that I had actually been speeding. I actually was dumb enough to think that it was just a random sobriety test or he wanted to warn me about something.
Nope. This little Ma'am was going 44 in a 25 mph zone.
How the hell did i manage that?
Oh the usual... I was coming out of a 45 mph zone that turns directly into a 25 mph zone... going down a hill.
The officer got me while I was breaking, and to be perfectly honest, I have no idea how fast i was going.
The kicker of the whole thing is that they pulled over someone else along with me. They let the person in front of me go, and I think the other person they pulled over was behind me.
Anyway, the officer that pulled me over showed me his little radar gun that said 44 and told me how "fast I was going." I politely said that I understood, and gave him my license and registration *after fishing in the glove box for a second, which was locked by the way, so i had to turn off the car and get my keys to unlock it*
Then he walked off, and wouldn't you know the other officer went up to the man they'd pulled over and told him that he too had been going 44 mph! What are the odds? Are you trying to tell me that there is no way at all that they could have both picked up the same car? Hell, that could have been the speed of the car in front of me. Maybe of the car behind us. Who knows?
Anyway, they weren't looking to give warnings, and I must not have flashed enough boob because the old fart *i mean police officer -- I couldn't have gotten a nice young dude* wrote me up. So now i have been looking online trying to figure how much i will have to pay if i am found guilty -- which i'm not entirely sure how i am supposed to argue that i am innocent. I can argue that two officers were hiding in a rickety white truck with a motorcycle hidden behind, and so i didn't see them there ready to pounce. I can argue that it is a steep drop in speed and they were standing at the end of the hill which is around a corner as well. Because the fact that they are sneaky bastards doesn't really help the fact that i was pulled over for speeding. And even if i were to say that i was innocent and there was no way that i was speeding, A. I don't really know that and B. I don't think that the judge would really care.
There is a way to just pay up instead of going to court, but in that case, you are automatically written up as pleading and being found guilty. So if i went to court, it would at least be written that i had plead innocent, but that doesn't help so much if i am found guilty anway. David's dad has a really good lawyer friend who has helped him out of traffic trouble in the past, but i don't know if that could help me in this situation. and i'd still have to pay for the lawyer most likely anyway.
And I'm having trouble figuring where to find the info online because i was given a couple of websites, but the network keeps time out and stuff on them. So i'm going to try to get david to help me later.
So on the one hand, all of my polite "yes, sir's" and smiles*i was really confused at first because like i said, i honestly hadn't realized i had done something wrong. I know i was going over 25, but right in that spot, i'm not sure that is possible. So i treated him with the same respect that i treat other officers and elders with.
Although, my attitude towards my "protectors" is beginning to change, because when you start pulling over nice young girls driving Buicks *you gotta watch out for super sporty cars like that -- just screams "rebel"* who are just on their way home from working at the library *that's right, i'm a wild one* and looking forward to baking Valentine's Day cookies with her younger brothers *because I obviously have forgotten my family values -- such a heathen*, I think you've hit a serious downward spiral.
On the other hand, the officer felt like shit after all was said and done.
This all reminds me of an incident that happened in the library a while ago:
A police officer came into the library and had a fine. So he flashed his shiny badge and asked my coworker, "Isn't there anyway you can make an exception for an officer of the law?"
And she looked him straight in the eye and said, "You wouldn't let me out of a speeding ticket just because I work in public service at the library."
And she made the f*cker pay up.
Although, my attitude towards my "protectors" is beginning to change, because when you start pulling over nice young girls driving Buicks *you gotta watch out for super sporty cars like that -- just screams "rebel"* who are just on their way home from working at the library *that's right, i'm a wild one* and looking forward to baking Valentine's Day cookies with her younger brothers *because I obviously have forgotten my family values -- such a heathen*, I think you've hit a serious downward spiral.

yummy food
so... i made my first cheesecake last night. only this one is low in carbs and sugar. It's pretty fatty though, so i wouldn't recommend eating too much of it, especially if you have also eaten a lot of carbs and sugars. But it tastes pretty good. David approves and David loooooves cheesecake.
I used my awesome new mixer that Alexa got me for Christmas, and i went out and bought some springform pans. I used the smallest size, but i think next time, i might use the biggest size so that the cheesecake is wider but not as tall, so when you cut a piece, you don't end up with a huuuge serving.
I'll post up the recipe when i post the cauliflower "mac" and cheese recipe. The only real special piece of equipment that you need is a springform pan and i found a three pack at wal mart for about 12 bucks. It also takes a long time to make so it isn't something you can just whip up in an hour and have for dessert. It has to cook for almost two hours, then cool in the oven for three hours, then cool in the fridge for another three hours before it can be served *David and I didn't go to church this morning because we were up half the night making sure it got taken care of* yeah... i started cooking the cheesecake at like 8 at night... wha? it turned out okay...

Food for yesterday was:
- cauliflower "mac" and cheese
- breakfast sausage
- sugar free peach jello with whipped cream *whipping cream mixed with imitation vanilla and splenda* I have discovered that heavy cream is best to buy for making whipped cream because it gets thicker much faster than whipping cream
- drinks = water
Food for today:

Food
okay, I haven't posted what I've eaten lately. The past few days, basically I have eaten a lot of fat but very little carbs and sugar, so some of the stuff sounds really bad, but considering what i am trying to do, it isn't so bad to begin with. I'm going to have to cut down on the fat though from meats especially, because i got sick yesterday because i had some sausages that were way more fatty than my tummy is used to. I feel much better today though.
Let's see if i can remember what all i've eaten lately:

Alyse's Book of Facts, Volume 3, Chapter 8, Page 322
Did you know that your body cannot process most raw fruits and veggies?
In fact, our bodies are more equipped to eat raw meat than to eat raw fruits and vegetables. As long as the meat is fresh, you are able to digest it without getting sick.
It's true! The plant cells' cellulose wall is too tough for our stomachs to get through. And we are not herbivores so we do not have a large pouch in our intestines for cellulose-dissolving bacteria from our food to be stored like rabbits do, for example. So all of those nutrients you thought you were eating all these years went right out the other end.
The solution? Either chew the hell out of that stuff, food process it like babyfood, or lightly cook/steam it -- be careful though, because overcooking can destroy heat-sensitive vitamins.
Actually, that point makes me wonder if perhaps I have some sort of oral allergy involving cellulose?
Also, your stomach cannot process starch. A component of your saliva breaks down starch, but all that is zeroed out once the food is in your tummy due to pH levels. Once the food goes into the small intestine, there is another enzyme that begins to break it down a bit more, but it has to be able to fit in there first, so don't go swallowing whole potatoes, you hear?
